To prevent a folding bandage, remove one side of the backing at a time.
CareKits that include composite dressings are considered waterproof with appropriate use. Appropriate use is defined to mean the adhesive border is smoothed down to ensure a watertight seal around the wound area. A key factor in making sure this happens is to wipe away any excess materials around the wound that might interfere with the adhesive.
Bordered gauze dressings are typically water-resistant meaning they should prevent the wound area from getting wet, but may need to be changed after getting wet.
While the saline bullet has a semi-flat base, it can become wobbly and topple over. To prevent this, you may place it in a clean cup or holder. If this is not readily accessible, the saline can also be rested on its side and will not spill out in a large quantity without being squeezed.
Your kit includes these two solutions for different purposes: the saline solution is used for VERIS product hydration and the irrigation solution is meant to be used for cleansing the wound area of any bacteria or debris.
VERIS is designed to be completely reabsorbed by your body, but in the instance that there is material left in the wound area, and depending on your provider instructions, you may either add additional saline and re-cover to encourage total re-absorption or add saline and allow it to re-hydrate for careful removal, taking care to ensure there is no peeling up of any newly granulated tissue.
VERIS is a non-sticky solid collagen & Manuka honey solid sheet that dissolves as your wound progresses. It has powerful performance to include: 2x faster wound closure, 99.99% bacteria reduction in 24 hours, inflammation reduction, and growth factor release. Studies and sources linked here.
VERIS can be replaced even if there is a small remnant of material left behind. It may need additional time to reabsorb and dissolve fully. Considerations for when to reapply could include how much is left in the wound area, how long has it been in place, is it dry, etc.
All of the supplies in your kit are non-irritating [with the exception of allergic reactions] with appropriate use. Should you feel an item is not helping your wound, please follow up with your prescribing clinician and discontinue use.
While the gloves are the ‘gold standard’ for ensuring no bacteria accidentally enters the wound area, nothing replaces washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water. If you would like additional cleansing, you may also use hand sanitizer. Best practices would be to wash your hands thoroughly prior to touching the wound area, especially if you have touched dirty materials at any point in the process.
Your provider should have instructed you on your specific dressing change protocol, but a general rule of thumb is to divide 30 days by the number of kits you received. [e.g., 15 received (30 / 15) would indicate a dressing change every 2 days.] You may also have been provided a discharge sheet that includes your tailored protocol.
Most, if not all of the supplies in your CareKits are single use only and single patient use only. Single use only means that once an item is opened, it should be discarded [always consult specific product labeling], and single patient use means that beyond the item being opened, if it is able to be re-used over multiple dressing changes, it should never be used on anyone outside of the first patient.
Should you have any remaining unopened supplies, they can be stored for later use or brought to your prescribing clinician’s office for proper disposal.
For medical advice or a clinical assessment of your wound status and progression, please follow up with your prescribing clinician or other emergency medical professionals in the instance of an emergency. MiroDX does not provide clinical guidance or advice.
